American Gothic – Internet Movie Rental – What is the Craze About

A group of yuppies charter a plane for a camping getaway, only to find themselves making an emergency landing on an isolated island. They are taken in for the night by the only inhabitants, the rapidly-religious “Ma & Pa”, who seem trapped in a Rockwellian time-warp. This proves to be every bit as unpleasant as it seems.

Happiness - Where to Enjoy a Free Movie Download Online

At times brilliant and insightful, at times repellent and false, Happiness is director Todd Solondz’s multistory tale of sex, perversion, and loneliness. Plumbing depths of Crumb-like angst and rejection, Solondz won the Cannes International Critics Prize in 1998 and the film was a staple of nearly every critic’s Top Ten list. Admirable, shocking, and hilarious for its sarcastic yet strangely empathetic look at consenting adults’ confusion between lust and love, the film stares unflinchingly until the audience blinks. But it doesn’t stop there. A word of strong caution to parents: One of the main characters, a suburban super dad (played by Dylan Baker), is really a predatory pedophile and there is more than an attempt to paint him as a sympathetic character. Children are used in this film as running gags or, worse, the means to an end. Whether that end is a humorous scene for Solondz or sexual gratification for the rapist becomes largely irrelevant. Happiness is an intelligent, sad film, revelatory and exact at moments. It’s also abuse in the guise of art. That’s nothing to celebrate. –Keith Simanton

All in the Family – The Complete Sixth Season – What Everybody Ought to Know About Online Movie Downloading

The more things change, the more they stay the same? When it comes to All in the Family, the answer is an unqualified yes and no. Considering the show’s tremendous popularity (this sixth season, spanning 1975 and ‘76, was the fifth straight year it held down the top spot in the Nielsen ratings), creator-producer Norman Lear was unlikely to make any drastic adjustments to the basic formula. And sure enough, in these 24 episodes (on three discs, sans bonus features), the four main characters–Archie Bunker (Carroll O’Connor, brilliant as ever), ditzy wife Edith (Jean Stapleton), daughter Gloria (Sally Struthers), and contentious son-in-law Mike Stivic (Rob Reiner)–and their relationships remain the obvious focal point. What’s more, while it’s true that various new developments, including Mike and Gloria’s move next door (to the house once occupied by the Jeffersons), her pregnancy, and the birth of little Joey, are more than cosmetic and account for the lion’s share of the storylines, All in the Family’s basic dynamic remains one of the strongest and most instantly recognizable in TV sitcom history. Ditto the writers’ penchant for the trenchant; social issues include tolerance and homophobia (Archie saves a woman’s life with “mouth-to-mouth restitution,” only to discover that “she” is a transvestite), women’s rights (Gloria gets fired for being pregnant), vigilantism (Archie fends off a mugger with illegal tear gas), religion (Archie wants his grandson baptized and raised as a Christian, but Mike has other ideas), and so on. And now more than ever, some of the language will seem a little shocking, as Archie regularly uses a variant of the gay slur that got Grey’s Anatomy cast member Isaiah Washington in very hot water more than three decades later.

Some changes, however, are a little more profound. The kinder, gentler Archie who began to appear a few seasons back is more in effect now; an extended and largely improvised scene in which he coddles his infant grandson is surprisingly tender, and when he hugs Mike after Joey is born, longtime viewers might wonder if what on earth has happened to TV’s most unrepentant, close-minded bigot. But hey, even cavemen evolved, and the Archie Bunker we see in Season 6 bears an increasing resemblance to a character he most surely inspired, one who usually ends up removing his foot from his mouth long enough to do the right thing: Homer Simpson. –Sam Graham

The Company – How to Watch Quality Movies Online

<table cellpadding=”5″ align=”right” <tr=”

Handsomely mounted, epic in scope, and featuring an outstanding cast, TNT’s The Company might restore some much-needed luster to the image of the Central Intelligence Agency (then again, perhaps not). Based on Robert Littell’s popular historical novel of the same name, the show commingles real and invented characters as it traces the CIA’s role in several major events, from the earliest days of the Cold War through the collapse of the Soviet Union, with particular attention given to the division of Berlin into East and West in the 1950s, the anti-Communist uprising in mid-’50s Hungary, and the disastrous Bay of Pigs operation in the early ’60s.

The first of the miniseries’ three parts introduces us to Yale graduates Jack McAuliffe (Chris O’Donnell), Leo Kritzky (Alessandro Nivola), and Yevgeny Tsipin (Rory Cochrane); the first two are recruited by the CIA, but the Russian-born Tsipin sides with the KGB. The initial focus is on the CIA’s efforts to find a Soviet mole who’s been interfering with the agency’s work and putting many American lives at risk. Working with mentor Harvey “The Sorcerer” Torriti (Alfred Molina), who calls him “Sport” and delights in pointing out that such matters are nothing less than a life-and-death struggle between good and evil and right and wrong, McAuliffe skulks around Berlin, where his principal informant and soon-to-be love interest is a lovely young ballerina (Alexandra Maria Lara) with a few secrets of her own. Meanwhile, back in Washington, the colorfully-named CIA counter-intelligence expert James Jesus Angleton (a real guy portrayed with low-key intensity by Michael Keaton) slowly realizes that the mole in question is one of his old pals. And it doesn’t stop there. Turns out there’s another double agent (codename “Sasha”) working for the Reds; this one’s deeply embedded in the CIA, and Angleton, a chain-smoking obsessive whose behavior becomes increasingly cold and peculiar, devotes years (and most of the series’ third installment) to outing him. The process by which he does just that, culminating in some fairly excruciating interrogation scenes, provides The Company’s best moments–especially because we don’t know until the very end whether Angleton has fingered the actual Sasha or not.

Viewers unfamiliar with the CIA’s history and methods aren’t likely to be very encouraged by what’s depicted here–especially in the second part, in which the agency’s misadventures in Hungary and Cuba reveal it (as well as the U.S. government overall) to be not merely ineffective but disastrously inept, as well as shockingly callous and hypocritical when it comes to lending material support to the causes it claims to espouse. Still, the series does a good job with many of the elements common to such fare (Robert De Niro’s 2006 film The Good Shepherd covers some of the same ground). Codes are written and deciphered. Secrets are kept and revealed. Shots are fired, and some of them connect. People die, good and bad alike. And even if some of the scenes are a bit overheated and melodramatic, all in all, The Company (which was written by Ken Nolan, directed by Mikael Salomon, and produced by John Calley and Ridley and Tony Scott) is smart and entertaining. And some of it’s even true. –Sam Graham

Gunsmoke – 50th Anniversary Collection, Volume 2 – Free Movie Clips

Gunsmoke: 50th Anniversary Edition Volume 2 picks up exactly where Volume 1 ends, with the long-running series entering its 10th year, each episode an hour long and Ken Curtis now a permanent member of the cast as the buffoonish Festus. A couple of other actors will come and go as cast regulars, but the core group remains: James Arness as U.S. Marshal Matt Dillon, Amanda Blake as saloon keeper Kitty, and Milburn Stone as Doc. This collection of programs cherry-picks its way through season 19, emphasizing guest stars of note including Leonard Nimoy, excellent as a wry Indian and skinner in “Treasure of John Walking Fox,” and William Shatner as a wily outlaw posing as a deputy sheriff in “Quaker Girl.” (Arness, who provides a brief, vocal introduction to each episode, notes that Shatner was already starring on Star Trek by the time “Quaker Girl” was broadcast in 1966.)

Bette Davis, Bruce Dern, and Tom Skerritt all appear in “The Jailer” (the first color episode in this collection), in which the legendary Davis plays a vengeful widow who kidnaps Kitty in order to lure Matt to his own execution. Ed Asner provides optional commentary for “Hung High,” in which he stars, while a young Dennis Hopper turns up as a villain out to kill a bounty hunter (a charismatic John D. Barrymore, father of Drew). Carroll O’Connor is very effective in “The Wrong Man,” Jon Voight (in the same year as Midnight Cowboy) makes a splash as a convicted murderer who saves Kitty’s life in “The Prisoner,” and Kurt Russell is solid and sympathetic as a young man determined to avenge the death of his father in “Trail of Bloodshed.” Special features include a couple of gag/blooper reels, a 1968 Emmy Award presentation to Milburn Stone, and a pair of old television interviews with Amanda Blake. –Tom Keogh
